Quick Overview (Why we're praying)

Pastor Dr. Tony Evans — founder of The Urban Alternative, long-time senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship in Dallas, and a widely syndicated Bible teacher — has been in the public eye recently after stepping away from his senior staff role due to an acknowledged past sin and has now begun preaching publicly again as part of a restoration process. The situation calls the Church to intercede for humility, healing, accountability, gospel clarity, and that Christ’s glory would be magnified through restoration and repentance.

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:11

Background & Ministry Summary

Dr. Tony Evans is a nationally known evangelical pastor, author, and radio teacher. He founded The Urban Alternative, authored many books, and led Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship for decades. His radio and teaching ministry reaches global audiences and has been a spiritual resource to thousands. His ministry emphasis has included biblical theology, family discipleship, and public witness for Christ.

Recent developments that require prayer

• In mid–2024 Dr. Evans publicly stepped away from his staff leadership role after acknowledging a past failure described by church leadership as “falling short of the high standards of Scripture.” The circumstances were not described as criminal but as a pastoral failure requiring repentance and restoration processes.

• In August 2025 he has been reported to be preaching publicly again at gatherings such as the Family Leadership Summit — a step that many are reading as part of a restoration or phased return to public ministry. This moment brings a need for prayer around genuine repentance, pastoral accountability, the welfare of congregants, and the clarity of the gospel in all communications.

Why prayer is needed

  • Repentance & Restoration: Pray that any restoration be genuine, God-honoring, and accompanied by humility and ongoing accountability (James 5:16).
  • Shepherding the flock: Pray for Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship and partner churches for pastoral stability, protection of the vulnerable, and wise leadership (1 Peter 5:2–4).
  • Gospel clarity: Pray that the situation would not confuse seekers and that Christ’s righteousness—not a leader’s reputation—would be exalted (Phil. 2:9–11).
  • Emotional & spiritual health: Pray for Pastor Evans and his family for peace, humility, restored intimacy with Christ, and spiritual renewal (Psalms 23; Phil. 4:6–7).
  • Salvation & discipleship: Pray for people affected by this story — church members, listeners, and the wider public — that many would come to saving faith in Jesus. (Romans 10:9–10).

Our Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, the Good Shepherd and the One who heals broken lives. You are merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love (Psalms 86:15).

We thank You for the ministry of Pastor Tony Evans — for decades of biblical teaching, gospel proclamation, and service to Your people. We confess that only Christ is our hopeful security, not gifted leaders. We ask now for a fresh work of repentance, humility, and sanctifying grace in his life. Restore what is broken according to Your faithful mercy, and let restoration be marked by transparency, accountability, and fruit that glorifies You.

Lord Jesus, draw Pastor Evans nearer to Yourself. Deepen his dependence on You, renew his love for Scripture, and give him a clear conscience through confession and godly counsel. Keep him and his family in Your peace; protect them from shame that destroys, and shape their witness into something that points many to the cross. (1 John 1:9; James 5:16)

We also pray for salvation — not only for those directly affected by this story but for any leader who needs renewed life in Christ. Where trust has faltered, bring repentance that leads to new life. Where hearts are hard, soften them by Your Spirit that many would call on the name of Jesus and be saved. Use this season to advance Your kingdom, not to tarnish it. (Acts 3:19; Romans 10:9–10)

Holy Spirit, comfort the Oak Cliff congregation and all who have been hurt or confused. Give elders and leaders wisdom to shepherd well, and provide resources for pastoral care, counseling, and reconciliation. May all things be done in love and truth for the health of the Church. (Eph. 4:15–16)

In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
