Why we are praying: A trusted church leader has been convicted and sentenced for sexually abusing multiple young girls he met while serving at Iglesia De Dios Ebenezer. This grievous betrayal wounds victims, families, and the reputation of the Church. We must pray urgently — for victims’ healing, for robust justice, for church accountability, and for spiritual repentance and salvation for all involved.

Brief summary — recent development

Carlos Ramirez Valdez, a former leader at Iglesia De Dios Ebenezer in Santa Ana, California, was convicted in 2025 on multiple felony counts for sexually assaulting three young girls he met at church over a multi-year period. He was sentenced on October 24, 2025, to a lengthy term of 45 years to life. The assaults were reported to have occurred between 2012 and 2019 in locations including a church basement, a vehicle, and other secluded spaces. The case has drawn local media attention and a public statement from the Orange County District Attorney underscoring the need for safe churches and full accountability.

Background — who is Carlos Ramirez Valdez and context

Carlos Ramirez Valdez served as a church leader at Iglesia De Dios Ebenezer in Santa Ana. He later worked at other local churches. Reports show he used his position of spiritual leadership and access to children and families to groom and victimize vulnerable girls. These crimes spanned years and involved repeated abuse of multiple minors (some as young as four years old). The betrayal is particularly painful because it came from someone entrusted with pastoral care and spiritual oversight.

Comprehensive timeline — facts & key dates

2012–2019: Period during which prosecutors say Ramirez Valdez committed repeated sexual assaults of three girls he met through church activities. Incidents occurred in a church basement, his vehicle parked at church, a backyard shed, and other private spaces.

```
2017–2019 (examples reported): One victim reported repeated abuse over seven years beginning at age four; another reported abuse during 2014–2015 after being given rides home from church; a third reported repeated abuse in 2017 in a backyard shed when she was seven and eight.
January 2020: Some victims began reporting the abuse to police and school counselors; police investigations were initiated and later coordinated across jurisdictions.
2021: Arrests and formal charging occurred after investigative work by police and the district attorney’s office.
August 2025: Trial concluded with convictions on multiple felony counts including lewd acts with a minor and oral copulation with a child 10 or younger (jury verdicts and guilty findings recorded earlier in the year).
October 24, 2025: Sentenced to 45 years to life in state prison — a sentence reflecting both the gravity of repeated, long-term abuse and multiple victims.
Why prayer is urgently needed — clear and specific reasons
  1. For survivors: Each victim endured prolonged trauma. Pray for physical, emotional and spiritual healing, courage to continue through legal processes, access to long-term trauma-informed counseling and protection from shame and re-victimization.
  2. For families: Families of victims need comfort, resilience, and wisdom as they care for children who have experienced betrayal and pain.
  3. For justice and safety: Pray that courts, law enforcement and social services would continue to work diligently to protect children and that sentencing and supervision prevent future harm.
  4. For the Church and congregations: Pray that church leaders and members will respond with urgency — strengthening child protection policies, transparency, pastoral care for survivors, and accountability where institutions failed to protect the vulnerable.
  5. For the spiritual state of the offender: Pray that the convicted man would face God-honest repentance. Pray for true conviction, confession, and the work of the Holy Spirit even in prison — not as a substitute for earthly accountability, but as an appeal to God to redeem and transform hearts.
  6. For community healing: Pray for restoration of trust, wise community conversations, and that this painful episode would catalyze stronger safeguards for children in all churches and ministries.
Concrete actions churches and individuals should take
  • Immediate review and strengthening of child protection policies: background checks, two-adult rules, safe-space policies, mandatory reporting procedures and training.
  • Provide trauma-informed pastoral care and counseling resources for victims and families — remove barriers to access and cover costs where possible.
  • Create transparent channels for reporting abuse and for independent review when allegations arise; avoid silencing or minimizing victims.
  • Implement community education about grooming, boundary violations and how to safeguard children in church contexts.
  • Mobilize prayer groups to cover victims, families, and congregations, and to intercede for systemic change that prevents future abuse.
    We come before You with broken hearts, grieving the terrible betrayal suffered by children who were entrusted to the care of one who represented the Church. Lord, You are near to the brokenhearted — draw close to each child who was harmed. Bring healing to their bodies, minds, memories and souls. Surround them with safe, skilled counselors and loving family, and bind up their wounds. We ask for Your protection over their futures and that they would not be defined by what was done to them, but by Your redeeming love.
    We pray for justice: grant wisdom and strength to investigators, prosecutors and judges. Let truth be exposed, and let justice serve both to punish wrongdoing and to protect the vulnerable. We commit the legal process to You and pray it would be conducted with compassion and thoroughness.
    We pray for the Church: convict us where we have been slow to act, give leaders humility and courage to implement protective measures, and help congregations to prioritize the safety of children above institutional reputation. Raise up pastors and leaders who model transparency, accountability, and gospel-centered care.
    We pray for Carlos Ramirez Valdez: we do not excuse his crimes and we demand accountability; yet we also ask You, O God, to work in the heart of every sinner. If there is any repentance, let it be genuine and transforming. If not, we pray for restraint so he cannot harm others and for the eventual flourishing of justice and truth even within prison walls.
    “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalms 147:3
    Lord, send Your Holy Spirit to bring comfort, restoration, and revival where needed. Use this painful season to wake churches to their responsibility to protect children and to call the Church to deeper faithfulness to Christ’s command to care for the least of these. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
