He Is Certainly With You: Christ the Rock, Our Provision and Redemption
Theme: God proves His presence not merely through provision, but through redemption in Christ.
Primary Texts: Exodus 17:1–7; 1 Corinthians 10:3–4
Introduction: Revival in the Trenches
In the midst of revival and spiritual renewal, believers are often tested not at the beginning or the end, but in the middle of the journey. Israel’s wilderness experience reveals how God responds when His people question His presence.
Expository Foundation
1 Corinthians 10:3–4 reveals that Israel’s wilderness provision was Christological in nature:
“They drank from that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.”
This frames Exodus 17 not merely as a miracle story, but as a redemptive revelation of Jesus Christ.
I. Loving God More Than Hating the Consequences of Sin
Text: Exodus 17:3
- Israel repeatedly longed for Egypt when trials arose.
- They did not desire God’s presence as much as relief from discomfort.
- True faith is anchored in love for God, not fear of punishment.
Supporting Scriptures: Psalms 73:25; John 6:26–27
Application: Many want salvation without transformation—freedom from consequences, not freedom from sin.
II. Do Not Replace Petition with Complaints
Text: Exodus 17:2
- The people murmured instead of praying.
- No call to intercession preceded their outrage.
- Complaining is Satan’s substitute for prayer.
Supporting Scripture: Philippians 4:6–7
Key Insight: What we complain about the most often reveals what we pray about the least.
III. God Often Hides Miracles in Ordinary Places
Text: Exodus 17:5–6
- The rock was common, unnoticed, and ordinary.
- Yet God embedded extraordinary provision within it.
- God regularly works through what we overlook.
Supporting Scriptures: Exodus 3:2; Judges 6:14; John 1:46
Application: God may already have placed your miracle within your reach.
IV. The Rock Was Struck So the People Could Live
Text: Exodus 17:6; 1 Corinthians 10:4
- The people deserved judgment; the rock received the blow.
- This act foreshadowed Christ bearing our punishment.
- The miracle was not merely provision, but substitution.
Supporting Scriptures: Isaiah 53:4–6; John 4:13–14
Christological Truth: Christ was struck once so living water could flow eternally.
V. Grace in the Midst of Rebellion
Text: Exodus 17:7
- The place was named Massah and Meribah as a reminder of unbelief.
- Yet God still supplied water.
- Grace flowed where judgment was expected.
Supporting Scriptures: Romans 5:8; Hebrews 4:16
Conclusion: He Is Certainly With You
God’s presence is not measured by circumstances, but by the price He paid. Christ’s sacrifice proves that God has not abandoned His people.
“He paid too much to leave you behind.”
Assurance Scripture: John 14:1–3; 1 Peter 1:18–19
Final Appeal: When tempted to complain, let it become an invitation to pray. When circumstances grow dry, remember—the Rock has already been struck.
