What does it mean that Jesus is our high priest?

The New Testament, especially the book of Hebrews, is among the most important source for the idea that Christ is our High Priest. The Bible compares and contrasts Jesus Christ's priesthood with that of the Levitical priesthood in order to examine His role as the ultimate and eternal High Priest for us.

What is Jesus doing for us now that he has ascended to the skies is the question? Not that the Father won't assist us, but how does he continue his job after giving his life for us by standing in our place, pleading with the Father on our behalf and being our advocate?
